Part 2 | Drinking & More Drinking in Vancouver, B.C

Like any metropolitan city, you can pretty much find a place to get a drink on every corner and Vancouver was no different. Since I am a freak about food and drink, I did a lot of research on Eater before hand. Our second day in the city, we did some day drinking but nothing with alcohol (I know, I know...so disappointing). Instead, we got out caffeine fix at two local coffee places and we were NOT disappointed. Thanks to this article on Eater, we ventured to Revolver and Timbertrain.

Revolver was packed so apparently this place is no secret. They were out of cold brew, so we shared an iced Americano. They rotate their coffee roasts daily and noticed Portland's Heart Coffee available for sale. If it wasn't so busy we would have ordered the coffee sampler but with no AC and sweaty people, we got our coffee to go.
From there, we made our way to Timbertrain, which was awesome. They have cold brew on Nitro which made for a creamy and delicious coffee. It looked just like a Porter or Stout beer. I would highly recommend this gem of a place. They are relatively new (only open 7 months) and they roast all their own coffee. We couldn't walk away without a bag.

Once our caffeine high wore off, we decided to go get some food and headed to the industrial rail area, to The Belgard Kitchen. This place is neat because it is a kitchen, brewery and urban winery all under one roof. I am obsessed. I loved everything about the ambiance, service, food and drink. Dylan ordered a craft beer flight from Postmark Brewing and I ordered a wine flight from Vancouver Urban Winery. Our favorite wine was the Cedar Creek Ehrenfelser...never have I ever tried this blend. Apparently it is a popular BC blend from the Okanagan region.

We stayed for hours enjoying the food, a bottle of wine and conversation with our awesome server. All the wine is served from the tap so nothing comes in a bottle. A "bottle" of wine is served in a vintage decanter and no two are alike. The staff and owners search the city for these unique beauties.

Part 1 | Eating & Drinking in Vancouver, B.C.

A sales event took me up North to beautiful British Columbia, so naturally, I recruited Dylan to come along to explore the lovely city of Vancouver. We drove up two days early, rented a loft via aArbnb and ate our way through downtown.

We went for a casual dinner the first night at Tap & Barrel in the Olympic Village. It was neat to walk around the village where the 2010 Olympic athletes lived for several weeks. Tap & Barrel is right on the waterfront featuring a great outdoor patio with lots of seating.

Our seasonal beer sampler was refreshing with a raspberry IPA and a blueberry wit, both from local BC breweries. Dylan was a good sport and drank the fruity beers with me. :)

In addition to the 24 beers on tap, they also have 14 wines on tap. We found out that wine on tap in Vancouver is very popular. Check out my next post on the Vancouver Urban Winery and you will know what I mean.

Fo dinner, I went out of my comfort zone a little and tried something unique on the menu - PB&J Burger! I did get the sweet potato fries though...a standard for me. The burger was complete with chipotle peanut butter, bacon jam and topped with a fried pickle! Dylan ordered the fish and chips after he saw it delivered to the table next to us. He gave it a thumbs up but said the cod didn't quite have as much flavor as halibut.

Check out one of their two locations for some pub fare and local craft beers!

Chowing down in Bend

We joined the crowds and headed to Central Oregon for some Memorial Day Weekend fun in Bend. The great thing about my parents having an RV is the ability to take impromptu trips and this was definitely one of them. It was just four of us this time - my mom, dad, brother and me.

Bend has grown into really fun town with lots of outdoor activities, restaurants and our family's favorite...breweries. We had every intent to participate in the full Ale Trail but opted to only visit about half them, including 10 Barrel Brewing, Worthy Brewing, Crux Fermentation Project and Good Life Brewing.
After a weekend of drinking, we decided to soak up the beer by trying a popular brunch spot before the ride home. Chow prides themselves on their simple approach to food by sourcing products locally and practicing sustainability whenever they can. This eclectic converted-house has ample outdoor seating and a small outdoor garden.
We waited outside with the Sunday brunch crowd but stopped by Backporch Coffee Roasters for lattes and americanos. When it was time to order, we started with a Pumpkin & Ginger Pancake to share and followed with our own entrées. I went with the obvious choice - Eggs Benedict. It was their daily special with pork, blue cheese hollandaise sauce served over brioche. Also, the Chicken Fried Steak exceeded expectation and I was pleasantly surprised at their version with caramelized onions and mushrooms.

If you find yourself in Bend this summer, stop in at 10 Barrel for a pint of their seasonal sour beer and walk over to Chow for lunch.

Yup...still, the best weekend ever.

The festivities continued.

First off, we pitched a tent in REI this weekend...so that was fun.

Friday was a great day for food, friends and a rooftop. Two of my friends hosted a potluck barbecue on their apartment's rooftop and it was a lovely evening for it. Kelsey featured a yummy barbecue chicken with homemade sauce and I loved the flavors! Check out the recipe on her blog.

a candid gem of the ladies on the rooftop

Saturday, we made our way over to the Oregon Brewers Festival. Yes...Saturday...at 4pm. This is quite possibly the worst time to go to a beer festival if you are actually trying to TASTE beers. It is hot, loud and busy with long lines. If you want to taste beers (1 token = taster, 4 tokens = a full beer), then I suggest visiting the festival on Wednesday, Thursday or early on Friday. Saturday and Sunday are crazy...good crazy, but a lot of people. Needless to say, I wasn't doing much tasting. If I am going to stand in line for 15 minutes, this girl is getting a full beer. This is what I was able to try:

Mt. Shasta Brewery's Skip And Go Naked - Strawberry Ginger Hefeweizen.
Burnside Brewing Co.'s Marionberry Berliner Weisse
Coalition Brewing Co.'s Wheat the People - American Wheat

I give a thumb's up to the Ginger Hefe (I love ginger) and the American Wheat. Burnside disappointed me with the Marionberry...you could hardly taste the berries!

Sunday was filled with more IPNC fun at the Passport to Pinot event. It was a beautiful summer day filled with food sampling and wine drinking. We had a blast! So many Pinots, so little time.

We were able to sample bites from Salt & Straw, PBJs, Crown Paella, Red Hills Market, Portland Penny Diner and so many more! Too many wineries to name, but you can check out the IPNC Web site for a full list.
Coquine Supper Club bites
love the concept - tapas catering by Crown Paella
a fantastic PDX band
Needless to say, it was a fantastic weekend of eating and drinking. Now it is time to gear up for the next festival, Feast Portland! I said it before and I will say it again...I am not missing it this year.

The best weekend ever.

Have I said that before about another weekend? Probably. But seriously, this is one of the best weekends ever.

If you love beer and wine, then you know what I am talking about.

The last weekend of July many Oregonians will be spending their time in the Willamette Valley enjoying the International Pinot Noir Celebration or relaxing on the Tom McCall Waterfront Park for the Oregon Brewer's Festival. Actually, both events are nationally recognized so many people come from all over to attend one of these two events.

Tonight I found myself enjoying a lovely setting and a spectacular sunset at Stoller Vineyards for the Pre-IPNC Summertime ¡Salud! Dinner. Fortunately for me, there was an extra ticket and I was the lucky one. I cannot even begin to describe the stunning views, delightful company and wonderfully executed family-style meal. Yes, you read that correctly, family-style....my favorite type of dining.

I couldn't wait to share some of the photos I took of the beautiful views. For once, I actually wasn't snapping photos of my food. What a bad night to forget my camera.

Also, take a look at the menu prepared by our very own, Chef Sunny Jin. Yes yes, I am biased because I work with the guy but seriously it was delicious.

garden beet & blueberry salad with briar rose madrona, candied walnuts, banyuls vinaigrette

juniper-scented heritage pork loin with sprouted wheat berries, scallions, radishes, fig-saba marmalade
grilled new york strip loin with yukon gold potatoes, chicory slaw, charred garden onions, dijonnaise

blackberry cobbler with greek yogurt, jory granola, brown sugar caramel
birch syrup panna cotta with tequila-pickled cherries, mexican chocolate sauce

Next up...celebrating Oregon Craft Beer Month.

How are you celebrating this weekend?

Cheers....Prost! Portland

Finally I spent some time over in North Portland on Mississippi Ave. What a fun area! I tell you, Portland is fantastic for food and drink. You will seriously NEVER run out of new places to try.

das boot
Prost! is a great German inspired pub with fabulous bier (yes, you have to spell it this way) and tasty traditional German food. We went there late night and it was really busy...definitely a fun spot to go to meet a bunch of friends. It was upbeat, lively and the bartenders were great!

Prost! is most popular for "das boot." Order a bier in an oversized boot glass but DO NOT set it down. If you do, the bartender will snatch it away and no more bier for you. You can pass das boot, share das boot but do not set das boot down until it is empty!

We didn't have anything to eat, but from what I saw people ordering, I recommend any of the beer cheese soups or a German pretzel. You can't go wrong. Also, how many places in town can you order my favorite bier...Dunkel Weiss? The tasty malt lager was delicious.

One other thing...if you are a @DrinkDeckPDX owner, there should be a Prost! card. I used one!

Since it is a bar, remember, you have to be over 21 after 8pm. No kiddos allowed after dark!

Brown baggin' it at Brix Tavern

This weekend was my third visit to Brix Tavern in Portland's Pearl District and yes, I do recommend it! It is a great spot for happy hour and perfect for a casual date.  The atmosphere is fun and upbeat, with live music. It is usually a one man show, but sometimes small bands play too. There are dart boards, a pool table and a foosball table in the back half of the restaurant There are a few televisions, but nothing obnoxious and it is not the focal point of the restaurant.

brown bag brew
One thing that makes this spot unique is their bartender's brown bag beer choice. You can order a beer for three bucks and the bartender will bring over a beer in a brown bag and surprise, you get what you get! It is a pretty fun conversation piece at the table. The guys love it.

Their dinner menu is extensive with a lot of selections. So far, I have played it safe with the margarita pizza and cheeseburger from the happy hour menu, but there are several other tasty selections. Next time, I will go for the Brix Chips or the Caramelized Butternut Squash & Pancetta pizza. Take a look at their menu online to find your favorite.

But, I need to be upfront and tell you the REAL reason I love Brix Taverm. Take a look at the menu and the house cocktails and you will find one ingredient I am very partial to. If you have read any of my previous posts, you will know right away that it is sweet basil. The lemon basil martini is made to perfection and I can't wait to eat my way through the rest of the basil-inspired menu.

Heading North to Breakside Brewery

If you have been reading my blog, most of you know that I love breweries and almost any type of delicious new brew. I first came across Breakside Brewery when they appeared in last year's Holiday Ale Fest. So, naturally, when they appeared on a daily deal Web site - I bought the deal. My brother, a few friends and I made the trek out to NE Portland to find this new brewery.

The ambiance was right up my alley with large barrel based tables, dim lighting, candles on every table and chalkboards listing the daily beer selections. With a copper bar top and metal accents, I really loved every detail. It was casual but still classy.

I do have to say, I wish I would have gone hungry and not just thirsty. The food looked incredible! I was sold when one of the servers walked by with blue cheese waffle fries. If the food tastes as good as it looked, I recommend trying it out. Check out the menu here.

As for the beer, we decided to try a variety of the selections available. My favorite was probably the "Wit," which is no surprise because it is a lighter beer with flavors of orange peel and coriander. It is also a Belgium-style beer and usually you can't go wrong with a good Belgium. My brother and his friends liked the Aztec Ale, but decided it was best in small doses because it is flavored with serrano and habanero chiles. Not to mention, it is 9.4% ABV. There are a variety of seasonal and experimental beers so before you head over, check out there updated beer list.

The newest project for head brewer, Ben Edmunds, is his collaboration with local chefs to make a beer that is "restaurant specific." Each brew will be featured in the brewery as well as each's chef's restaurant. I think this is such an innovative idea and a new spin on pairing food and beverages. You can read more on this collaboration here.

A little fun fact: The bartender told us, "breakside" is a term used in Ultimate Frisbee and the owners/founders are big Ultimate players. I love Portland.

Drink up and enjoy!

50 Beer Taps at Green Dragon in SE

Whenever I feel like trying new beer or exploring another side of town, I head over to Green Dragon in SE Portland. A friend introduced me to this brewpub last year and it is awesome because they have about 50 rotating beer taps and you will always find something new on their menu. By now, most of you probably know I have a love for new microbrews, so this place is right up my alley.

The atmosphere is low-key and casual with a shuffle board table and plenty of board games. The beer list is not fancy and is printed on an 8 ½ x 11 white piece of paper but this wrinkly piece of paper is tolerable if you are getting new beer choices everyday. They have a chalkboard on their back wall listing all the beers “on deck” encouraging all their beer drinkers to return for a taste of the new upcoming flavors. If you are lucky, they may even tap one early for you.

Unfortunately, I would not rant and rave about the service. It is just okay. If you are sitting at a table in the brewpub, you will have limited service. Someone will come when your glass is empty and if you order food, they will drop it off and leave. The food is decent, but it is not what brings people to this establishment. But, if you are sitting at the bar, you will have great interaction with the bartender. Most of them are knowledgeable about the beer and can offer you suggestions if you are overwhelmed.

So, if you decide to visit Green Dragon, remember:

If you are with a small group, sit at the bar and talk to the bartender
They only have beer so please don’t try and order liquor
Try something new and ask for recommendations

Davis Street Tavern - Valentine's Day

5th and NW Davis

I don't hate Valentine's Day and let me tell you why. This day focus on four things - love, chocolate, flowers and FOOD. Single or not, this is a great day for anyone to go out and get a fantastic meal. My rule of thumb for February 14th - try a new restaurant (actually, I guess that is always my rule of thumb). But, I have been dying to go to Davis Street Tavern in Portland, so this was my chance!

We had late dinner reservations, so it was pretty quiet. Looks like their was live music, which I was sad we missed. This place is normally packed around the dinner and especially for happy hour. I have heard from multiple people that they have a fantastic happy hour menu. The bar area is not very big though, so if you plan to check it out, get their early!

We sat in the back of the restaurant near a few other couples and the atmosphere was comfortable and cozy. The lighting was dim and the music was perfect (I need to get a copy of the playlist). Our table setting was simple, with a square place mat, brown napkin and high ball glasses. I wanted to order wine, but as always, I went for the beer. Dylan had the Fish Tail Amber Ale and I tried Mack n' Jack's Wheat. Both local choices. The menu for the evening was special for Valentine's Day with five or six entree choices. We ordered the traditional caesar salad, scallops and the New York strip.
I was pleasantly surprised with the size of the scallops - there were three served on top of a coconut and parsnip puree with broccoli. It was very tasty, but I must say the amount of food was a little small. I would have liked a little more of the puree or an additional side. Dylan's meal was the perfect amount of food - New York strip with sauteed chicory and a potato leek pastry. Yum!

We had a very nice time and I would definitely go back...maybe next time for happy hour. But, thanks to Portland Perks, I had a deal for Davis Street Tavern so it helped out with the bill a little bit.

Check them out - any day of the week!

Holiday Ale Fest 2010

I was not the only one who enjoyed some great beer this holiday season Portland's Holiday Ale Fest. Hundreds of people gathered at Pioneer Square for the five day seasonal ale fest and sampled local brewer's latest creations. There were so many different holiday flavors and a ton of new beers featured at this year's festival.
beautiful city lights of Portland

When you enter the festival, you are greeted with holiday scents like cinnamon, nutmeg and peppermint. It was so cozy and all the scents were captured under the big white tents covering Pioneer Square. It was definitely a great way to kick of December. Next time, I vow to try some of the food I was smelling, it all looked pretty incredible. It reminded me of an adult version of a Christmas bazaar...knocks the socks of the usual elementary school craft bazaar.

So a quick recap on the way beer fests work - usually you pay an admission and get a mug, beer tickets and a guide. Then when you get in, there are tables set up with volunteers pouring all the beers. You have the option of using your tickets for a 4oz taste or you can pay extra tickets for a full mug. This festival was just that - $25 for a mug and 10 beer tickets.

Here were some of the favorites of the night:

Laht Neppur Brewing Co. - Waitsbur, Washington: Toe Tingler Stout  (I LOVED this one....it was so festive and had flavors of maple syrup....yum!)
Vertigo Brewery - Hillsboro, Oregon: La Nina Coffee Porter
Stoning Brewing Co. - Escondido, California: Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Beans

Ones we missed:

Block 15 Brewery - Corvallis, Oregon: Figgy Pudding, Olde Stock
Buckman Village Brewery - Portland, Oregon: Ginger Beer

signs indicating the beers

Overall, a huge success and we had a great time, as usual. Take a look at the full list of the beers featured at this year's festival here.

Brews at Bridgeport Pub in NW

Last week was the week for beer - a late night at Bridgeport Brewpub and then some Holiday Ale Fest fun.  I would recommend Bridgeport Brewery any day of the week for some good food and quality craft beer. They are open seven days a week until 10pm or later.
Bridgeport Beer Chart with IBUs and alcohol content
The brewpub is two stories with bars on each level and a gift shop on the main level. The walls are all red brick, candles light up the tables and leather couches are available for lounging. I love the atmosphere because it is always lively and everyone is in good spirits. Maybe that is just the beer talking? But still, a perfect place for large or small groups.

The Beers
Cases of Night Cap
We started with the winter seasonal brew - The Ebenezer and then followed with their Haymaker Pale Ale. I know the Haymaker is more of a summer beer, but I love the rich, crisp flavors. It is always a nice beer to start with. The Ebenezer has more hops than the Haymaker but has a nice sweet malt finish with flavors of barley.

They also had two other seasonal beers this year - Nightcap Winter Ale and Old Knucklehead. I really liked the Nightcap because it was similar to the Ebenezer but sweeter with more caramel flavors.

Check out all their ales and ingredients here.

The Grub
chicken sandwich
For dinner, we ordered the Brewhouse Macaroni + Cheese, House Smoked Pulled Pork and the Spicy Haymaker Chicken Sandwich. I will sum up the meal with a plus about each dish.

Mac n' Cheese - topped with crushed up house-made kettle chips...yum.
Pulled Pork Sandwich - get it just for the potato salad (the sandwich is traditional but good)
Chicken Sandwich - the bread was awesome and the chipotle mayo has a nice kick to it.

Endless Eats meets Seattle!

It was time for a vacation, which meant it was time for some new restaurants! Our destination cities were Seattle and San Francisco with a side of Sausalito. As you read the next series of posts, just remember Endless Eats is on a little field trip to Washington and Northern California.
The first stop in Seattle was the famous Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle. Let me start by saying it was torture walking by all the fresh vegetables, seafood and beautiful floral arrangements because I could not buy any to take back with me. But, for anyone visiting Seattle for the first time, I highly recommend walking through the market - rain or shine (most of it is covered.). We did stop for some tasty fish and chips during a happy hour at one of the local pubs. The pub even had a Dunkel beer from Leavenworth, Washington. The best find of the trip!
Next, we decided to burn the calories off by walking about 100 feet to the market's local brewery to get some more beer at The Pike Brewery Company. I cannot believe this was my first time trying their beer. I must say I was pretty impressed. We ordered a sampler so we could try six of their beers.

Here were the beers included:

Pike Naughty Nellie - Golden Ale (One of Dylan's favorites - a light beer with nice flavor and little bitterness)

Pike Pale Ale - Heirloom Amber

Pike IPA - Indian Pale Ale

Pike Kilt Lifter - Scotch Ale

Pike Tandem - Double Ale (This one was my favorite with flavors of coriander and sugar cane. So good!)

Pike XXXXX - Double Ale (If you like hops and stout beers, you will love this one - a little too bitter for me, but many love it)

We had a great time and I was excited to find out there are plenty of places in Portland to buy these beers.

Next time you are in Seattle, check out the brewery for yourself (they also have a happy hour!)

Forkfly Event at Henry's Tavern

So tonight is a quick post - I had so much fun at dinner tonight sitting on the patio at Henry's Tavern on 12th in NW. It was nice weather again so we had to take advantage of it because Autumn is approaching quickly!

We went for happy hour, but sadly found out happy hour prices are not offered on the patio! Such a bummer. But, we also found out that Forkfly was putting on an event right next to Henry's patio for First Thursday. They were playing great music, giving away prizes and conducting this awesome scavenger hunt. We were just spectating, but we should have done it - people were winning ipads and hotel staysat The Benson!

Forkfly is this awesome app and social media tool that offers great discounts at Portland merchants. We used one for Henry's tonight - buy one appetizer, get one free! Follow them on Twitter for great deals.

I love my Thursday dinner club with my girlfriends and Henry's is always a staple place to go.

PROS: Fantastic beers on tap (good fruity ones too), extensive menu with lots of variety, great happy hour prices, large patio

CONS: No happy hour on the patio :(

Drink up! - Portland International Beerfest

I love summer for two reasons - the beautiful weather and the plethora of beer festivals in Oregon! So, two weekends ago, my friends and I made it out to the PIB (Portland International Beerfest) in the Pearl District. I especially like this beerfest because there are usually a decent amount of dunkel beers (my favorite). AND...it just so happened to be my friend's birthday, so there was a large group of us attending.

It was out on the lawn in the North Park Blocks on NW Davis and NW Park Ave. This festival is smaller than the Oregon Brewer's Festival on the waterfront, but still just as fun and has shorter lines.

So, how it works - you get an official PIB glass, a beer guide and tickets that can be used for 4oz pours or pints of beer. Personally, I like to use all my tickets for 4oz tasters because I love trying new kinds of beer. Plus, if you don't like it, it is only 4oz!

Next you have to tackle the guide - I like to look through it to find the beers I want to taste. The guide tells you a little bit about the beer (type, brewery, alcohol content etc...), number of tickets for a taste and its location at the beer fest. It is all a little overwhelming at first, but once you get going, it is awesome! I always track down the fruit beers first because I am a chick and I like chick beers. But, of course, I tried others too! See below.

Fruit Beers

Hell or High Watermelon Wheat from 21st Amendment Brewery - I have tried this before - pretty good for a watermelon beer, but not my favorite fruit beer.

Raspberry Wheat from Cascade Brewery - this was the female favorite and it was not even on the guide! It was a replacement beer because they ran out of another one. Boy were we lucky!

*Anthem Cherry Cider from Wandering Aengus Ciderworks - there is an asterisk by this one because technically it is not a beer, but we did try it anyway! Very cherry flavored and had mixed reviews from everyone. Go figure the guys did not like it but some of the ladies thought it was refreshing and like a melted otter pop popsicle!

Other beers

Spaten Munich Dunkel from Spaten West - always delicious! A dark wheat beer with flavors of raisins - it is like a dark hefe.

Ayinger Brau Weisse from Merchant du Vin - a tasty unfiltered Hef Weizen, always good for summer days.

De la Senne Equinox from Shelton Brothers - a nice belgium beer but with very strong flavors, I was disappointed I did not try more from this brewery because there were quite a few.

Beers I missed...but have to try!

John John Juniper Ale from Rogue Brewery

Franziskaner Dunkel Hefe-Weisse from Spaten West

Of course we tried a lot more beers, but I lost track. I tried to be official and circle them on my guide, but I only got about half way through before I got too distracted. Overall, a success and I wish I could say I went to the Oregon Brewer's Fest, but unfortunately I did not make it. You better believe I will be next year though!

Check out http://www.beernw.com/events for more beer events in the Northwest!
