This citrus ricotta cake.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgvsrW1B7J_2GvidLLbh5lBrVLrHJqHmDDEV6X7iS0BuwV8LQGKhHcDh4eSAdUdAeZeJbcdpiRf6fEYzuDyQfpb73Mah0QqED9qkmAPIHhyphenhyphenpcK51tEqlXlewmoMb5HVb8j3SErRoVEC9g/s1600/IMG_2222.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgvsrW1B7J_2GvidLLbh5lBrVLrHJqHmDDEV6X7iS0BuwV8LQGKhHcDh4eSAdUdAeZeJbcdpiRf6fEYzuDyQfpb73Mah0QqED9qkmAPIHhyphenhyphenpcK51tEqlXlewmoMb5HVb8j3SErRoVEC9g/s640/IMG_2222.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This "baking a cake" thing all started because of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BAVa4yJGLx6/?taken-by=lizprueitt_tartine" target="_blank">THIS</a> Instagram post form Elisabeth Prueitt of <a href="http://www.tartinebakery.com/" target="_blank">Tartine Bakery</a>. I saw the post and instantly wanted to make it...no substitutions, no variations...I wanted this cake. Then, it sealed the deal when I saw Deb of <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BAhwcyapg9D/?taken-by=smittenkitchen" target="_blank">Smitten Kitchen</a>...made.the.cake. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do I have a gluten allergy? No. But, who cares? Look at this CAKE...you need it. So, I walked to the store, got myself some Cara Cara oranges, almond flour and ricotta. My Saturday was committed to baking a cake. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, this cake isn't "hard" but I would say intermediate because it has quite a few steps. Baking takes patience and I usually don't stray too far from my baking recipes and this one is no exception.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I don't trust myself with "loose" baking instructions, I opted to follow the Smitten Kitchen recipe but followed Elisabeth's lemon inspiration. I used Cara Cara Oranges and lemon...not Blood Oranges. I couldn't find the darn things anyway...plus, Cara Cara Oranges are wonderful and delicious for baking, juicing and eating as they are. </div>

<br />
I did use zest and juice from the oranges AND lemon but honestly, do whatever you would like. Pick one or use both. I just happened to have the lemon so opted to use it and the color is magical. Also, I did a lot of citrus layering since I cut so many slices but get creative and lay the citrus anyway you would like!<br />

<b>Citrus Almond Ricotta Cake </b><br />
adapted from Elisabeth Prueitt's version of The River Cafe's Torta di Ricotta e Polenta<br />
<br />
<a href="http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2016/01/blood-orange-almond-and-ricotta-cake/" target="_blank">via Smitten Kitchen </a><br />
<br />
<i>My baking notes: </i><br />
- I baked at 300 degrees for 55 minutes...15 minutes longer but this recipe is pretty forgiving with the ricotta so it won't dry out easily. Just monitor closely after 40 minutes. 50 minutes is probably the sweet spot for my oven.<br />
- I skipped the glossy finish...just went with the brown sugar glaze.<br />
- Cut your parchment paper perfectly or you might end up with some bubbling...hence the lines across my cake. I am so freaking lazy...don't be lazy. Cut your perfect parchment paper circle.<br />
<br />
Now, go bake this cake so you can use that pretty cake plate of yours. Duh.<br />

This is my farewell post to my absolute favorite vegetable season. See you next summer yummy BLTs and delicious Caprese salads. I will also miss this play on traditional bruschetta from one of my favorite bloggers. I usually follow <a href="http://www.howsweeteats.com/" target="_blank">How Sweet Eats</a> recipes to a tee, but I made a couple modifications because well, I was lazy and wanted to skip steps like grilling. I don't have a balcony for barbecuing in my new apartment and walking to the communal BBQ is just.too.far. No, not at all, but I love raw corn so here we go!<br />
<br />
It is pretty darn close to her recipe, so feel free to jump over to her blog at take a look too.<br />

<b>Tomato, Corn, Basil + Whipped Roasted Garlic Cheese Crostini </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(adopted from <a href="http://www.howsweeteats.com/2013/06/summer-crostini-with-whipped-roasted-garlic-goat-cheese/" target="_blank">How Sweet Eats</a>)</div>
<br />
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.<br />
<br />
1 baguette, sliced<br />
12 ounces of sheep's milk cheese (goat cheese or feta cheese works too!)<br />
2 tablespoons of whipped cream cheese<br />
1 head of <a href="http://www.howsweeteats.com/2009/09/roasted-garlic/" target="_blank">roasted garlic</a><br />
2 ears of raw sweet white corn, cut from the cob<br />
1 pint of heirloom tomatoes (grape, cherry, sun golds...I love the color)<br />
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped<br />
1 teaspoon olive oil<br />
salt and pepper to taste<br />
<br />
-Place sliced baguette onto baking sheet and bake until golden, about 8-10 minutes (bake longer if you want it really crispy)<br />
-While bread is baking, add cheeses and roasted garlic cloves to a food processor and blend until creamy.<br />
-Toss corn, basil, sliced tomatoes in olive oil, salt and pepper.<br />
-Spread your whipped roasted garlic cheese on your baguette and then top with the tomato/corn/basil goodness.<br />
<br />
Eat as many as you possibly can! That's what I do.<br />

And then...I took a four month hiatus but I promise, it was for good reason! At the end of February, I took a new kick ass job working with three great restaurants in SE Portland. The opportunity to work closer with food and beverage was a no brainer. The Portland food and beverage culture is amazing and I am lucky to work with such a welcoming and creative community of people.<br />
<br />
With that said, I will try to share more of my eating adventures in the city but forgive me if I spam you with the food and drink happenings out on SE Division. Now I have even MORE access to the 411 on Portland events, so I will keep sharing the details! Check out the latest <a href="http://do503.com/p/pizza-problems-not-in-portland" target="_blank">post</a> on do503.com about my obsession with pizza...as if you didn't already know.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I feel like most people either LOVE or HATE mushrooms and I definitely used to be one of the haters. Over the years, I have experimented with recipes and find that I like them more and more. Will I eat raw mushrooms? No. Will I eat sautéed mushrooms in a balsamic glaze? Of course. I will also eat these little guys too...stuffed with sausage or not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was my last minute Super Bowl appetizer and I think everyone liked it. I wanted to please the masses, so I made some stuffed with sausage and some vegetarian. There were even some anti-mushroom eaters that seemed to enjoy them too. I mean...it is healthy, right? </div>

Why has it taken me this long to have brunch at <a href="http://www.olympicprovisions.com/pages/menus" target="_blank">Olympic Provisions</a>? I know I have told you about the SE location for dinner but now it is time to tell you about the NW location for brunch. One of my goals this year is to walk more...anywhere and everywhere. Sunday seems to be the easiest day for me to do this. I decided to head towards Industrial NW Portland and just happened to be passing Olympic Provisions. Coincidence they opened at the EXACT moment I walked by? I don't think so. Brunch was my destiny for the day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was the first one in the restaurant but that didn't last long. The server was great, super helpful and offered great <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0220/3502/files/BRUNCH_58fc6aa3-20a0-4414-ad37-6a50ab376fbc.pdf?14926" target="_blank">recommendations</a>. She said all the Benedicts were great but specifically called out the traditional and the prime rib. Since it was my first time, I went for the traditional. HELLO...delicious. Honestly, my new favorite in Portland. The hollandaise sauce was flavorful but was not too rich. The ham was sweet with a little crisp and the eggs were poached to perfection. Oh and the potatoes...yeah, those are special. A layered potato situation made in an onion reduction...Chef's speciality. Similar to a gratin, with the layer potatoes, but just so much better. </div>

I think Olympic Provisions is a Portland staple and consistently I leave satisfied. Next time I am trying those chilaquiles...for sure. My server was kind enough to let me run back to the kitchen for a photo (my apologies to the patron waiting for their food...had to get the shot, duh.)<br />
<br />
Also, a nice spot to visit solo because there is bar seating and seating near the window suitable for the "one top." It was a gloomy day so I don't have any beautiful views to report, but it was nice to have a window seat.<br />
<br />
If you are feeling fancy after brunch, walk over to <a href="http://www.smithtea.com/pages/contact-us" target="_blank">Steven Smith Tea</a> for a yummy tea tasting too.<br />

My weekday morning routine usually consists of a green smoothie and a "healthy" muffin or yummy bread. Let's be honest, I could eat a buttery almond croissant every morning but I try to save those for special occasions. You know, like the weekend. :)<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of my all time favorite recipes is this <a href="http://endlesseats.blogspot.com/2014/10/banana-almond-muffins-healthy-and-vegan.html" target="_blank">Banana Almond Muffin</a> recipe but when I want to do something different with my ripe bananas, I go for a more traditional banana bread. This recipe is great because it is made with coconut oil and maple syrup. I even add greek yogurt for some protein. The yogurt is an alternative to a banana so, if you don't have the greek yogurt, just add in another ripe banana instead.<br />

<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Flax Seed Banana Bread</span></b><br />
adopted from my fav, <a href="http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2012/09/crackly-banana-bread/" target="_blank">Smitten Kitchen</a><br />
<br />
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.<br />
<br />
2 large ripe bananas<br />
1/3 cup greek yogurt<br />
1 large egg<br />
1/3 cup coconut oil, warmed until it liquefies<br />
1/3 cup brown sugar<br />
1/4 cup maple syrup<br />
1 tsp vanilla extract<br />
1 tsp baking soda<br />
1/4 tsp table salt<br />
1 tsp ground cinnamon<br />
1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg<br />
1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour (I used Bob's Red Mill)<br />
1/4 cup flax seed<br />
<br />
- Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with some of your coconut oil and set aside.<br />
- In a bowl (I used my KitchenAid stand mixer), mash up the bananas and then mix in the yogurt.<br />
- Whisk in egg, coconut oil, brown sugar, maple syrup and vanilla.<br />
- Add baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and still until combined.<br />
- Still in flour (1/2 cup at a time if you are using the mixer) and the flax seed.<br />
<br />
Pour mixture into your prepared loaf pan and bake for 50 minutes or until your toothpick comes out clean when you test it.<br />
<br />
<i>Note: </i>Let the bread cool in the pan before you remove it. I have no patience so I usually pull my bread out too early and haven't allowed it enough time to cool and finish baking in the warm pan. It is easier to slice if it is cooled too.<br />
<br />
Enjoy! </div>

This was my third trip to <a href="http://coopershall.com/" target="_blank">Cooper's Hall </a>and it won't be my last. I like the ambiance and the "good feel" this place has. Every time we go, my girlfriend and I daydream about how stunning a wedding reception would be. It is just so lovely.<br />
<br />
Cooper's Hall is a working winery and taproom, so it is very industrial, which I love. All their house wine is served from the tap and we all know how crazy I am for this. Remember when I discovered <a href="http://endlesseats.blogspot.com/2014/09/part-2-drinking-more-drinking-in.html" target="_blank">Vancouver Urban Winery</a> in B.C.? It reminds me a lot of that place. Of course, they have beer on tap and craft cocktails to please the masses, but I always go for the wine.<br />
<br />
The first two times I visited CH was just for wine at the bar but I couldn't help but notice all the great food coming from the kitchen. At first, I didn't think it was really a place to order food, but I was dead wrong. Since I have no self control, I decided this time I would try the house stew - green chili pork with white bean and hominy. Yeah...I will be emailing for the recipe. Oh, and let's add some crème fraîche and serve with bread too. So good.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can always count on a great night with great company at CH. This visit, I decided on their white wine flight so I could try their Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay and Cascadia White. My favorite was the Cascadia White because it was crisp and refreshing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can visit Cooper's Hall on a cold winter night for the warm and cozy vibe or check it out in the summer when they have all the rolling garage doors open. You won't be disappointed! </div>

It is amazing how liberating it feels to say good bye to one year and welcome another . In the past, I haven't really put much thought to my resolutions or goals for the year, but I think that is about to change. My biggest goal this year is to give Endless Eats a much needed makeover and more attention in general. Here are a few things to look forward to:<div>

I heard about PREAM from a friend and figured I would check it out eventually, because yes, pizza rules everything around me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ned Ludd has been bringing in red and white checkered table clothes and playing the awesome throwback R&B tunes for about a year now. PREAM makes Portland Mondays a little bit better. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
There was no wait and we got a table quickly. The <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/menu/pizza-monday/" target="_blank">menu</a> is simple with a few salads, pizzas and recently added...pasta! We went for a spinach mushroom pasta and a sausage pizza with a béchamel sauce and chile oil. Not your traditional pizza, but definitely delicious. The popular pizza was the traditional Margherita and I WISH we would have gotten it. Gah...it looked so fabulous. Shocking...I wanted basil, tomatoes and mozzarella. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
If you have a larger group, don't worry because they also serve pizza in their private space, <a href="http://nedluddpdx.com/elder-hall/" target="_blank">Elder Hal</a>l, right next door! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It is a great spot and the perfect way to start your week. Ned Ludd is cozy with a visible wood fire oven and rustic ambiance. Their team brings out your order as it is ready so a fun place to go for sharing. You all know me...I LOVE sharing. </div>

One of the best things about living in Portland is the ability to take day trips at the drop of a hat. This includes day trips to the Oregon Coast, Mt. Hood, The Gorge or Wine Country. My brother recruited me to join him and his girlfriend on a drive up the coast to Astoria. Oh my gosh...what a day it turned out to be. It was an incredible November day. Look at those blue skies! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Naturally, I center most my adventures around food but we needed to work up an appetite first! We decided to explore the Peter Iredale shipwreck and Fort Stevens State Park. I haven't been there since I was a kid so it was neat to read about the history this time. But of course, we still acted like kids and took turns climbing it like a jungle gym. </div>
<br />
Next stop, <a href="http://www.fortgeorgebrewery.com/beers/" target="_blank">Fort George Brewery & Public House</a>. This is probably one of the most well-known places in Astoria, except for the my recent discovery of <a href="http://www.bowpicker.com/" target="_blank">Bowpicker Fish & Chips</a>. Do you like food trucks? Well, this place is a food boat. Simple menu with fish and chips served on land from the bow of a boat. Anyway...back to Fort George. We did the tasting flight which offered over a dozen samples! Good thing we shared. I really liked their Oatmeal Pale Ale and their seasonal, <a href="http://www.fortgeorgebrewery.com/beers/seasonal/java-the-hop/" target="_blank">Java the Hop</a>. It is like this coffee, chocolate, smooth IPA. It is not dark like a stout and easy to drink. Oh and if you are feeling crazy but don't want beer, they have a Wasabi Ginger Ale. Yes, woah.<br />

Next stop, <a href="http://www.bluescorcher.com/Scorcher/Home.html" target="_blank">Blue Scorcher Bakery & Cafe</a>. Why? Because we needed a cookie after all those savory beers. It also helped that it was in the same building as Fort George. We sampled a Swedish Limpa bread...who has tried this? It was a first for me and such a nice treat with flavors of orange and fall spices. I tasted the anise seed instantly but was told their was fennel in it too. Delish! This is not their <a href="http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/swedish-limpa-recipe" target="_blank">recipe</a>, but I imagine this is similar to what I ate. We walked out with a large chocolate ginger molasses cookie and that poor cookie didn't make it a block. We devoured it on our walk to <a href="http://www.buoybeer.com/" target="_blank">Buoy Beer Company</a>.</div>

Buoy Beer Company was neat, I wished I took more photos. Their taproom is right on the water so there are great views of the ocean and all the ships coming in and out. We went for clam chowder and sweet potato fries. The best kind of comfort food on a crisp, fall day at the coast. There was an incredible rainbow over the ocean that captured most of the patrons attention. We will have to visit again when we can spend more time sampling all the beers. The rain was coming, so we wanted to get on the road quickly.<br />

We hit the jackpot in Astoria and I was pleasantly surprised with how far this little coastal town has come. Next visit will call for an overnight stay because I want to try the pre-Prohibition cocktails at Albatross.<br />

<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.nuvrei.com/" target="_blank">Nuvrei Pâtisserie & Cafe</a> has decided to step up their game and provide Portland with it's very own MAC bar. I had the privilege of attending a launch party where I was able to sample croissants, macarons and bagels...all house made. I have only visited Nuvrei one other time and clearly, I have been missing out. The almond croissant I took with me barely made it out of the car. I mean really, a fresh croissant needs to be eaten on the spot. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I arrived, my mouth was welcomed with a buttery, warm croissant (yup...I had two) before I even had a chance to walk in the door. Oh yeah, why am I here again? The macarons...let me get back on track. Nuvrei has always had a great reputation for their perfect macarons and now they have a special MAC BAR to feature all their incredible flavors. My favorite of the night was chai but I also sampled chestnut, hazelnut and white chocolate. Next time I visit, I want to try earl grey and espresso. Nothing like having dessert for dinner! My kind of night. </div>

Muselet will feature French-influenced cooking from Chef William Harper, a veteran of several of Portland's finest restaurants, with a food-pairing focus on Champagne and regional sparkling wines. This new restaurant and wine bar is a perfect match for me because I love bubbles and I don't need a special occasion to drink them.<br />
<br />
Once this 80 seat restaurant (+ seasonal patio seating!) is open, then I will share my experience but for now, check out one of these three opportunities for a sneak preview!<br />

Looking for a fast breakfast idea? These muffins are it! I have made this recipe three times now and don't plan to stop anytime soon. They are easy to make and a quick "grab n' go" item in the morning. I think way too many people skip breakfast because they don't have time and when they do grab something, it may not be the healthiest option. I mean, I definitely indulge in a good brunch with some sweet and savory dishes but I try to keep my M-F breakfasts healthy and packed with all the good stuff. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Enjoy! </div>

<b>{Vegan} Banana Almond Oatmeal Muffins</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
adopted from <a href="http://www.coffeeandquinoa.com/2013/09/banana-almond-baked-oatmeal-cups-vegan-a-giveaway/" target="_blank">Coffee & Quinoa</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1/2 cup almond butter</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1 1/2 cups mashed ripe bananas (4-5 bananas) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
3 cups old-fashioned oats (I used gluten-free oats)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1 1/2 cups plain unsweetened almond milk (I used vanilla)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1/4 cup maple syrup</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1 tsp vanilla extract</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1/2 tsp kosher salt</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
1 cup raw sliced almonds + extra for topping</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- Grease a muffin tin with baking spray. These muffin tins will be filled to the top!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and stir until thoroughly combined (I used my KitchenAid stand mixer for this). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- Spoon into muffin cups. Top with a few sliced almonds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- Place on rack in the center of the oven and bake until oatmeal cups are firm to the touch, about 20-25 minutes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
- Wait several minutes for oatmeal cups to cool before running a knife around the edges and removing them from the tin. Voila! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I refrigerate and take one with me each morning for a breakfast on the go! These also freeze well, so if you make a large batch, you have the option of freezing and pulling them out as you need to. </div>

</div>
It has officially been one week since Feast Portland's Tillamook Brunch Village and I think I am finally coming off the food high. This is the first year for Brunch Village and it was similar to the Grand Bounty Tasting...but better...because it was all centered around pastries, biscuits and morning cocktails. Portland puts a priority on their "brunching" so it is only fitting that there is a Feast event dedicated to this meal.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCjA22Pdr_ZcDZRARcmt7Hja8qKD9aSMWOC__ESRJLlw0W18wKfab_-BJfoxAFDItqBtz-Rf0RlqnDa-pPzlVRrR9XjGoQybsxVEWtPTt9f04ZLKnRj3IDmPA7esFR882HKYPinokZDfY/s1600/IMG_6339.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCjA22Pdr_ZcDZRARcmt7Hja8qKD9aSMWOC__ESRJLlw0W18wKfab_-BJfoxAFDItqBtz-Rf0RlqnDa-pPzlVRrR9XjGoQybsxVEWtPTt9f04ZLKnRj3IDmPA7esFR882HKYPinokZDfY/s1600/IMG_6339.jpg" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
We started with <a href="http://thecountrycat.net/#about" target="_blank">Country Cat's</a> bacon birch syrup cinnamon roll and what a way to start off the morning! I could have eaten two of these little pieces of heaven but knew it would be wise to save my stomach for another sweet treat. We wondered over to one of <a href="http://stumptowncoffee.com/" target="_blank">Stumptown's </a>three stations and found cold brew on Nitro. Then, it was time for a Bloody Mary from <a href="http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/pearl" target="_blank">Whole Foods</a> and a grapefruit mimosa from the <a href="http://www.bonappetit.com/" target="_blank">Bon Appétit Magazine</a> tent. The Bloody Mar bar was insane...so many hot sauces and garnishes. Typically this is not my cocktail of choice, but with that spread, I had to make one!<br />

The only item I feel I really missed out on was Los Angeles' Egg Slut's bacon kimchi rice with a poached egg and other goodness. They were poaching eggs on site...so impressive and the presentation looked incredible. Check out Union Wine Company's Instagram <a href="http://iconosquare.com/p/814668527975502610_219832787" target="_blank">post</a> and you will know what I am talking about.<br />
<br />
I hope Feast Portland brings back Brunch Village next year because I am definitely attending again. In fact, I have already recruited a handful of foodies to join me!<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Yes yes...we went for BBQ...again. We can't seem to get enough of it this summer and when I saw this <a href="http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-22681-the_best_ribs_in_portland_22_racks_ranked.html" target="_blank">article </a>on Portland's best ribs, it naturally prompted us to take a stroll to the Alphabet District and try <a href="http://www.smokehouse21.com/x4o245ey6ycjpatf1fptppui2oj1sj" target="_blank">Smokehouse 21</a>. We have probably walked by this place a dozen times and have never noticed it. It is a small restaurant with a sign up high, so be sure to look for it. I believe they have a sandwich board and outdoor seating now so you can keep an eye out for that too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Although the restaurant is small, the menu definitely isn't. There are a variety of sandwiches, entrees, sides and menu items that can be ordered a la carte. We both ordered entrees with two sides each and of course, I made sure we did not duplicate on side dishes. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHWcH3SLgm9jqiPDcF4Wzh8wwlT3nX3sre7Kcxeb-v-YNlKH4BDQGILu49wKvsmaUrquK2pZC0r68xtUl54t7xPODTxRgm6tfvfP3zlLxOgqsZRspjfUOMh48Y1vPxk7IQjrSGouEcoA/s640/blogger-image-434271940.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHWcH3SLgm9jqiPDcF4Wzh8wwlT3nX3sre7Kcxeb-v-YNlKH4BDQGILu49wKvsmaUrquK2pZC0r68xtUl54t7xPODTxRgm6tfvfP3zlLxOgqsZRspjfUOMh48Y1vPxk7IQjrSGouEcoA/s640/blogger-image-434271940.jpg" width="480" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV0eqYDpfZKleP3iD-I15Uunplbp5_Gq2n7ADCR3eqDAN1qhuXfP8affC_DCjlrki3KTowD7PRFYEJqgeL38-VIApQ2Jupub-5OQwNv_B4NwuNevz1TJQbY0Q_AsHBI612i9k64pbSowo/s640/blogger-image--197962033.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV0eqYDpfZKleP3iD-I15Uunplbp5_Gq2n7ADCR3eqDAN1qhuXfP8affC_DCjlrki3KTowD7PRFYEJqgeL38-VIApQ2Jupub-5OQwNv_B4NwuNevz1TJQbY0Q_AsHBI612i9k64pbSowo/s640/blogger-image--197962033.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I have learned that ordering a starter or appetizer at a BBQ joint is never necessary because of the amount of food you get, but when am I EVER practical when it comes to food? So, I started with the bacon molasses cornbread with honey butter syrup. I blame Dylan because he ordered a deviled egg with a big ol' piece of sausage on top and I definitely couldn't let him eat alone. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Our combined order was pulled pork, brisket, cole slaw, mac n' cheese, potato salad and baked beans. I have the hardest time ordering anything but pulled pork and wasn't disappointed. Dylan said the brisket was some of the best he has had - even better than Podnah's Pit in NE Portland! It was tender and smoky with a lot of flavor. All their meat is served dry so you can add sauce to your liking. I went for the classic Texan-style sauce but they have many others to choose from. </div>

Stay tuned because I will be sharing my brunch experience with you with lots of photos after the event. Although this event is sold out, there are many still available over the weekend.<br />

We were still determined to find the diner and at the very least, check it out. Once we reached <a href="http://www.redwagoncafe.com/" target="_blank">The Red Wagon Cafe</a> and saw the line outside, all hesitation went away. A long line of locals is a great sign! Funny how all the sudden MY brunch picked turned into Dylan's "great pick."<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN5hkXfTRJbyAixz6adNlqfWc1QwShigJyigkGPiQjE_ilR8n7xtIeBhpwbUKDdpgVU3SDPsSh_KgQXxwDuut9O2r-bUICPKy73rV7Nj2d2u77GBSQdGF3ZV3cLyGbwiWpVlILhLW-ax0/s640/blogger-image--1764752185.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN5hkXfTRJbyAixz6adNlqfWc1QwShigJyigkGPiQjE_ilR8n7xtIeBhpwbUKDdpgVU3SDPsSh_KgQXxwDuut9O2r-bUICPKy73rV7Nj2d2u77GBSQdGF3ZV3cLyGbwiWpVlILhLW-ax0/s640/blogger-image--1764752185.jpg" width="640" /></a>We had a short wait, probably because it was Monday. I imagine on the weekends there is a lot longer wait since the restaurant isn't very large. The staff was friendly as they bussed and seated people quickly.<br />
<br />
The menu speciality is their pulled pork pancakes served with three buttermilk pancakes layered with pulled pork and JD-spiked maple syrup. Although I am a pulled pork lover, I did not order them because I had my eye on the sausage breakfast sandwich with two eggs, aged cheddar, tomato chutney, mayo, arugula, ciabatta and home fries.<br />
<br />
Oh and then there were the chilaquiles...with added pork belly. Dylan's pick as per usual. Always a great choice and seriously, look at the size of that piece of pork belly.<br />

Like any metropolitan city, you can pretty much find a place to get a drink on every corner and Vancouver was no different. Since I am a freak about food and drink, I did a lot of research on <a href="http://vancouver.eater.com/" target="_blank">Eater </a>before hand. Our second day in the city, we did some day drinking but nothing with alcohol (I know, I know...so disappointing). Instead, we got out caffeine fix at two local coffee places and we were NOT disappointed. Thanks to this <a href="http://vancouver.eater.com/archives/2014/06/04/where-to-drink-coffee-in-vancouver-right-now-1.php" target="_blank">article</a> on Eater, we ventured to Revolver and Timbertrain. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<a href="http://revolvercoffee.ca/home/" target="_blank">Revolver</a> was packed so apparently this place is no secret. They were out of cold brew, so we shared an iced Americano. They rotate their coffee roasts daily and noticed Portland's <a href="http://www.heartroasters.com/" target="_blank">Heart</a> Coffee available for sale. If it wasn't so busy we would have ordered the coffee sampler but with no AC and sweaty people, we got our coffee to go. </div>

From there, we made our way to <a href="http://timbertraincoffeeroasters.com/" target="_blank">Timbertrain</a>, which was awesome. They have cold brew on Nitro which made for a creamy and delicious coffee. It looked just like a Porter or Stout beer. I would highly recommend this gem of a place. They are relatively new (only open 7 months) and they roast all their own coffee. We couldn't walk away without a bag. </div>

Once our caffeine high wore off, we decided to go get some food and headed to the industrial rail area, to <a href="http://belgardkitchen.com/" target="_blank">The Belgard Kitchen</a>. This place is neat because it is a kitchen, brewery and urban winery all under one roof. I am obsessed. I loved everything about the ambiance, service, food and drink. Dylan ordered a craft beer flight from <a href="http://postmarkbrewing.com/" target="_blank">Postmark Brewing </a>and I ordered a wine flight from <a href="http://vancouverurbanwinery.com/" target="_blank">Vancouver Urban Winery</a>. Our favorite wine was the Cedar Creek Ehrenfelser...never have I ever tried this blend. Apparently it is a popular BC blend from the Okanagan region.<br />
<br />
We stayed for hours enjoying the food, a bottle of wine and conversation with our awesome server. All the wine is served from the tap so nothing comes in a bottle. A "bottle" of wine is served in a vintage decanter and no two are alike. The staff and owners search the city for these unique beauties.<br />

A sales event took me up North to beautiful British Columbia, so naturally, I recruited Dylan to come along to explore the lovely city of Vancouver. We drove up two days early, rented a loft via aArbnb and ate our way through downtown. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We went for a casual dinner the first night at <a href="http://www.tapandbarrel.com/" target="_blank">Tap & Barrel </a>in the Olympic Village. It was neat to walk around the village where the 2010 Olympic athletes lived for several weeks. Tap & Barrel is right on the waterfront featuring a great outdoor patio with lots of seating. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Our seasonal beer sampler was refreshing with a raspberry IPA and a blueberry wit, both from local BC breweries. Dylan was a good sport and drank the fruity beers with me. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
In addition to the 24 beers on tap, they also have 14 wines on tap. We found out that wine on tap in Vancouver is very popular. Check out my next post on the Vancouver Urban Winery and you will know what I mean. </div>

<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />
Fo dinner, I went out of my comfort zone a little and tried something unique on the menu - PB&J Burger! I did get the sweet potato fries though...a standard for me. The burger was complete with chipotle peanut butter, bacon jam and topped with a fried pickle! Dylan ordered the fish and chips after he saw it delivered to the table next to us. He gave it a thumbs up but said the cod didn't quite have as much flavor as halibut.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few weeks ago, I was in the mood to try a Portland favorite - <a href="http://www.olympicprovisions.com/" target="_blank">Olympic Provisions</a>. Since this is a "meat" place, I knew it wouldn't take much to convince Dylan to go. We ended up having the perfect summer date night in SE Portland at the bar, overlooking the open kitchen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEije3cD2PIPB3m4A4z3Vd3tZdZTz8QpsiqS5jMsVLR0UHxW45PEV-hv19SgN2dCvkuK85z9lJX5OnyIFXW29fGi3ExYQIjMgOxcFY9QrwQBgFXHAQ-848eil1Wj63HWpcL1tKj23tlI-fo/s1600/IMG_3775.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEije3cD2PIPB3m4A4z3Vd3tZdZTz8QpsiqS5jMsVLR0UHxW45PEV-hv19SgN2dCvkuK85z9lJX5OnyIFXW29fGi3ExYQIjMgOxcFY9QrwQBgFXHAQ-848eil1Wj63HWpcL1tKj23tlI-fo/s1600/IMG_3775.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a>We started with charcuterie, since this is their speciality. Olympic Provisions charcuterie is served in many Portland restaurants so we decided the Chef's selection of five meats was the way to go. Let the experts pick their favorites, right? We both loved the spice of the chorizo.The charcuterie board also came with some tasty pickled vegetables too. Did you know they have a Master Pickler? </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For dinner, I ordered something vegetarian, which I thought was funny. It was gnocchi with lemon, scallions and some other yummy flavors. The sauce was creamy and those little potato dumplings were cooked to perfection. Dylan had the braised beef short rib and it fell off the bone. This seems to be a staple on their menu but they change up the set depending on what sides are in season. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlPWj1yZ6Tmjmao2DcDmuyZyZ04hi0hvQERUAuvQebQ6wJCFG0yE1sUd4WfOjhcjWu5gdAh5WGLm3dO6ousTGkbV3X47Ll9ku6aJ8zPZ7D9PCRBQOppX7Bn2N53gwJJSoy7B9-SP25AlI/s1600/IMG_3765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlPWj1yZ6Tmjmao2DcDmuyZyZ04hi0hvQERUAuvQebQ6wJCFG0yE1sUd4WfOjhcjWu5gdAh5WGLm3dO6ousTGkbV3X47Ll9ku6aJ8zPZ7D9PCRBQOppX7Bn2N53gwJJSoy7B9-SP25AlI/s1600/IMG_3765.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The SE location is in an industrial area, but the inside of the building is comfortable and nice. It is an open concept with lots of windows and high ceilings. There were couples, families and larger parties dining. Even a classy looking group of men for a bachelor party. :)<br />
<br />
There are two Olympic Provision locations, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. They describe the locations "as siblings, sharing the same lineage but each has their own identity." I just love that.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtMIbcQ93sWHfOpbdIYiTeU_sQUmubnAAjBNiYl2ECHw1_B3WtOCtjjFzr0DfT2Gk3wopNMDh7lZOG9gHHJ98UBzKIhagnfGLHmOzH4zWDMnfLTnl8mRCxAOVefvICg6yE-RQrbvurEvg/s1600/IMG_3767.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtMIbcQ93sWHfOpbdIYiTeU_sQUmubnAAjBNiYl2ECHw1_B3WtOCtjjFzr0DfT2Gk3wopNMDh7lZOG9gHHJ98UBzKIhagnfGLHmOzH4zWDMnfLTnl8mRCxAOVefvICg6yE-RQrbvurEvg/s1600/IMG_3767.JPG" height="426" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Our next visit will probably be for brunch at the NW location because we have heard it is just as lovely in the mornings as it is in the evening. Of course, if you can't make it to a restaurant, Olympic Provisions sells their goodness in many local stores - Whole Foods, New Season and Fred Meyer.<br />

And now there is a WHOLE <a href="http://www.nwcider.com/oregon-cider-week-events" target="_blank">week</a> in Portland dedicated to cider. This makes me happy. You know what else makes me happy? Cider cocktails at <a href="http://sainthonorebakery.com/" target="_blank">St. Honor<u>e Boulangerie</u> </a>with my girlfriends. With all the incredible ingredients being used in cocktails, the St. Honore team decided to use their creativity to mix up some fun cocktails but without the liquor. It is a great concept if you are an establishment that doesn't have a liquor license.</div>

We tried these cocktails at the newest location on SE Division and I learned they have a <a href="http://sainthonorebakery.com/locations.php" target="_blank">happy hour menu</a> served from 4:00pm - close. St. Honore is a bakery so naturally they have beautifully baked treats and fresh savory breads. Lots to choose from on the menu! <a href="http://www.twelfth-avenue.com/" target="_blank">Kelsey </a>tried french macaroons for the first time and these little cookies were extra sweet since they are made with real apple cider.<br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We joined the crowds and headed to Central Oregon for some Memorial Day Weekend fun in Bend. The great thing about my parents having an RV is the ability to take impromptu trips and this was definitely one of them. It was just four of us this time - my mom, dad, brother and me. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Bend has grown into really fun town with lots of outdoor activities, restaurants and our family's favorite...breweries. We had every intent to participate in the full <a href="http://www.visitbend.com/Bend_Oregon_Activities_Recreation/Bend-Ale-Trail/" target="_blank">Ale Trail </a>but opted to only visit about half them, including <a href="http://www.10barrel.com/" target="_blank">10 Barrel Brewing</a>, <a href="http://www.worthybrewing.com/" target="_blank">Worthy Brewing</a>, <a href="http://www.cruxfermentation.com/" target="_blank">Crux Fermentation Project</a> and <a href="http://www.goodlifebrewing.com/index.html" target="_blank">Good Life Brewing.</a> </span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We waited outside with the Sunday brunch crowd but stopped by </span><a href="http://www.backporchcoffeeroasters.com/" style="font-family: inherit;" target="_blank">Backporch Coffee Roasters</a><span style="font-family: inherit;"> for lattes and americanos. When it was time to order, we started with a Pumpkin & Ginger Pancake to share and followed with our own entrées. I went with the obvious choice - Eggs Benedict. It was their daily special with pork, blue cheese hollandaise sauce served over brioche. Also, the Chicken Fried Steak exceeded expectation and I was pleasantly surprised at their version with </span>caramelized<span style="font-family: inherit;"> onions and mushrooms. </span></div>

It was my month to select the restaurant for the Supper
Club and I went for tapas! I love tapas and family-style dining because you can
try so many different dishes. <a href="http://ataulapdx.com/" target="_blank">Ataula </a>may not be the best place to go starving
because the small plate prices add up quickly, but, sort of the nature of tapas. None
the less, it was delicious and I would go back in a second!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>

<br />
We tried several dishes, including the potatoes bravas which
required intensive prep time. Our server told us all about the hours of prep it
takes for these beautiful little fried potatoes and I devoured them in less
than a minute. Of course I loved them, but wished they were topped with an egg
like many other tapas places do. The paella was also tasty and the largest dish
we had that evening. They offer a couple different varieties of paella and we
went for the most traditional. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<br />
Last, we ended with dessert, which I don’t always order at
restaurants. It is not because I don’t LOVE dessert, I am usually just way to
full. There were donuts on this menu, so naturally, I looked to my friends and
asked if they wanted to share. THANK HEAVENS we did because it came with FOUR
donuts. I was thinking it was going to be these little beignets, one-bite guys
and no, we got four wonderful cinnamon and sugar donuts. <o:p></o:p></div>

Overall the service was great and the food was creative and
delicious. Ataula offers all kinds of specials so I know if we go back again,
there will be something new to try. I wish I could carry on about the cocktails
but my I.D. was M.I.A so no drinks for me. I swear, I am never carded until the time I
DON’T have my license. Figures.<br />

Since I missed out on the Friendsday event last month, <a href="http://www.izze.com/" target="_blank">Izze</a> was kind enough to send the party to me! It was awesome…Izze sparkling juices and a <a href="http://www.plated.com/">Plated.com</a> meal came right to my door step. Obviously, I couldn't leave out my boyfriend and brother so I invited them to my “friendsday” event. Since two boys is never enough (and our meal served four), we invited my brother’s roommate too. My friendsday quickly turned into “boysday.” It was all good until we got to the DIY crafts. Just wait.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Our chosen meal was the Basil Beef Bowl. Yeah yeah…I would choose a meal with basil. It was very tasty and easy to make. I really liked the quinoa instead of my usual, brown rice choice. My ONLY recommendation for this recipe is to cut the yellow onion in half. We followed the recipe exactly but once the onion was chopped up, I knew I shouldn't use it all. I sauteed them all anyway, added it to the quinoa and instantly regretted it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Also, I was only able to marinate the beef for about 30 minutes but it still had great flavor.</div>

The Izze sodas were a fun touch and a special treat for the meal. Go figure, we all agreed that they would taste great with vodka! Not necessary on Wednesday night so we stuck to the already delicious, virgin Izze sodas. My favorite was grapefruit, very refreshing. </div>

Little did I know, the included crafts from <a href="http://www.brit.co/tag/brit-kits/" target="_blank">Brit Kits</a> were for necklaces and bracelets. I thought it was awesome because the boys could give their beautiful finished products to their girlfriends…winning points with their ladies, it is a no-brainer. Not to mention, it meant I ended up with two necklaces. I loved every minute of it and have accepted the fact that DIY projects NEVER look like the photo. Well, the boys wanted it to look like the photo so you can only imagine the commentary throughout the crafting. It wasn't as easy as they expected but each of them ended up with some, well… finished products. Thanks Brit Kits for the awesome crafts, such a neat concept.</div>

He can't get enough of it and there is no arguing I love it too. <a href="http://tiltitup.com/" target="_blank">Tilt</a> isn't a new restaurant in Portland but they have a newer location in the Pearl District. Our first stop was back in December and I think we have indulged four or five times since. It is just like they say...food built for the American Workforce.<br />

They are known for their massive burgers, biscuits and pie. The neat part about the Pearl District location is the bar side with beer and craft cocktails Personally, I can't get enough of their breakfast sandwiches on the house made biscuits with a side of bacon, cheddar tots. Yes...bacon and cheddar with fried potato. No, do not come here for healthy eats because temptation will get the best of you. It is made to order and served hot!<br />
<br />
Other <a href="http://tiltitup.com/" target="_blank">tasty dishes</a> are the The Big Tilt, Mad Andy and the Tilted House Fries. You can seriously have gravy on anything you want. Next time I am not walking out of there without ordering a cinnamon roll covered in gooey goodness. It is huge and requires a partner to share it with but it will happen.<br />

Even if you aren't hungry but looking for a fun, casual atmosphere, I would recommend Tilt Bar for drinks. It is an upbeat atmosphere and great for watching a game, socializing or playing ping pong if the table is open.<br />
<br />
Check out either location at Swan Island or in the Pearl District and COME HUNGRY!<br />
